Over the last few years, billions have been poured into gaming, yet we keep getting half-finished, buggy releases with weak storylines and forced political agendas shoved into every corner. The core of gaming – the gameplay, immersion, and escapism – has been neglected.
With today’s news that Microsoft is laying off around 9,000 employees, including in their gaming divisions, I can’t help but hope this signals a reboot for the industry.
Don’t get me wrong – I never want to see anyone lose their job. It’s tragic for families and communities. But at the same time, these massive companies need to refocus on what truly matters: creating great games that people actually want to play. Games that let us unwind after a long day’s work, not ones that bombard us with political messaging and clunky unfinished mechanics.
Maybe this is the wake-up call the gaming industry needs. Get back to the basics. Focus on gameplay. Focus on storytelling. Focus on creating experiences that transport us to another world.
